La Crosse’s Davis scores 10, as Badgers nearly blow 18-point lead to advance in B1G tourney
La Crosse native Jonathan Davis had 10 points, two rebounds and a steal, as the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team squeaked into the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals.
The Badgers nearly blew the 18-point lead they had with eight minutes to go in the game, but managed to hold off Penn State 75-74. Wisconsin (17-11) now plays fifth-ranked Iowa around 9 p.m. Friday — a team it lost to 77-73 last Sunday.
Penn State (11-14) went on a 17-2 run to end the game.
On the Nittany Lions’ final possession, with 18 seconds to go, Wisconsin’s Nate Reuvers deflected a passing attempt in the lane, and teammate Brad Davison grabbed the loose ball. He called a timeout with 0.3 seconds left, to essentially secure the win.
Davis finished 4 of 8 from the field, including 1-for-1 from beyond the arc. The 6-foot-5 freshman is averaging 7.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 24.5 minutes a game this season. Davis is second on the team in steals, third in rebounds and sixth in scoring.
