Badgers’ Leonard turns down job; Packers hire Barry, from Rams, instead
Former University of Wisconsin football walk-on Jim Leonard didn’t want to be the Green Bay Packers next defensive coordinator.
Reports on Saturday that Leonard, the Badgers defensive coordinator who walked onto the program back in 2001 from Tony, Wis., to become a three-time, first-team All-American, turned the job down in Green Bay.
The Packers did find their replacement for Mike Pettine, however.
Joe Barry will be the new defensive coordinator in Green Bay.
Barry was the L.A. Rams assistant head coach and linebackers coach the past four seasons.
The 50-year-old, who was part of the No. 1-ranked defense, had already agreed to join the Los Angeles Chargers, as their defensive passing game coordinator and linebackers coach a few weeks ago.
Green Bay had the No. 9 defense last season.
