After 47-game win streak is snapped, Aquinas gets top seed in section
The 47-game win streak may have come to an end over the weekend but the Aquinas High School’s girls basketball team is the No. 1 seed come playoff time.
Despite a week to go in the regular season — Aquinas plays twice yet —the top-ranked and defending state champion Blugolds (19-1) have the top spot in the Division 4 sectional.
The Blugolds (19-1) will have a first-round bye, like a lot of teams in the division, and won’t play until next week Friday.
Meanwhile, Central will host Logan in the first round of the Division 2 regional at 7 p.m. next Tuesday. Onalaska is the top seed in that section.
Aquinas lost 82-61 on Saturday at a Hopkins (20-0) team that’s ranked No. 20 in the nation and has the No. 1 recruit of the 2020 class — a guard being coveted by Uconn and Notre Dame.
The Blugolds have won 74 of their last 76 games. Their only other loss came 44-43 in the 2017 state championship to Howards Grove.
