Brett Favre wants Rodgers unleashed, not hampered by new offensive scheme
Aaron Rodgers is excited for a new coach, after 14 seasons with Mike McCarthy — 11 as a starter.
There have, however, been some grumblings about Matt LaFleur’s offensive system limiting Rodgers’ ability to call audibles at the line.
Rodgers didn’t think it was smart to “turn off 11 years” of reading defenses.
Now, Brett Favre, who endured two seasons with McCarthy as coach (going 8-8 in 2006 and 13-3 in 2007), has chimed in on Rodgers’ side, believing his ability to freelance shouldn’t be hampered by an offensive scheme.
“Aaron will be fine,” Favre said told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I think that the thing is he needs to remain the same. And I don’t have to give him any advice. You know, he’ll handle it well.
“The question is, ‘How will they handle it with him?’ And obviously, that’s very important. I mean, there’s more to the team than Aaron but we all have to admit that when he’s playing and playing well, which generally when he’s playing he is playing well, you don’t want to change what’s working. There’s other factors that you have to work on.”
With LaFleur’s system, there’s little need to audible, as they’re already built into whatever the defense is showing. Favre, nicknamed the gunslinger, of course wants to see the 35-year-old Rodgers unleashed.
“I think you let him play his game and not disturb that very much,” Favre said. “And it’s going to be interesting to see if that happens.”
