No. 6 Badgers fall 0-3, all against Top 6 teams, while Gophers upset No. 1 Texas
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The sixth-ranked University of Wisconsin volleyball team dropped to 0-3, after a 3-1 loss to No. 5 Stanford on Monday at the Milwaukee Bucks arena.
All three losses have come to teams ranked in the Top 5, including Sunday’s 3-1 loss to No. 1 Texas.
And most of the sets have been close. All three of Stanford’s set wins Monday came by three points or less (26-24, 18-25, 25-22, 25-22).
The Longhorns, too, on Monday, fell in Milwaukee, to 18th-ranked Minnesota, 3-2 at the Intersport Volleyball Showcase. The Gophers (1-1) did lose Sunday to Stanford, 3-2.
Wisconsin made it to the Final Four last season, after they started the year 18-0. They lost to Texas 3-0 in the semifinals.
It’s likely that No. 2 Nebraska (3-0) will move to the top spot in the rankings. The Cornhuskers, who lost 3-0 in last season’s national title, opened the year with a 3-1 win over No. 9 Kentucky, followed by two unranked wins.
Next up for Wisconsin, the Big 10-Big 12 challenge with TCU on Friday followed by a matchup with host, No. 23 Baylor, on Saturday. The Gophers will play the same schedule, just flipped — Baylor on Friday followed by TCU on Saturday.
