No. 15 UW-L looks to get back to College World Series for 2nd-consecutive season, beginning Friday
A trip back to the College World Series for a second-consecutive season is on the line Friday for the UW-La Crosse baseball team.
The 15th-ranked Eagles (35-14) begin a three-game, two-day series at No. 5 UW-Whitewater (38-8) at noon. Game 2 is at 11 a.m. Saturday. Game 3 would be right after that, if necessary.
The Warhawks are 4-1 against the Eagles this season. Their last matchup was for the WIAC tournament title, in which UW-W won 11-3.
None of the games between the two teams this season have been particularly close. They played four of the five during back-to-back doubleheaders on April 20-21.
UW-L won the first 6-1, but lost the second 23-1 in eight innings. The Warhawks scored 17 runs in the top of the eighth inning to end that one early.
UW-W’s other two wins came 10-7 and 10-2 the next day.
To get to the super regional, the Eagles went 4-1, scoring 75 runs, during at Copeland Park last weekend.
Last season, UW-L beat UW-Stevens Point in the super regional to get to the College World series, where it went 0-2 in being eliminated.
The Eagles have made three trips to the College World Series. The other two came in 2015 and 2016. They finished runners-up in 2015.
