UW-La Crosse indoor track and field teams make NCAA history with women’s and men’s championships
At the recent NCAA Division III championship meets in Birmingham, Ala., both the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s women’s and men’s indoor track and field teams won national championships.
It is the first time in NCAA history that a single school has won both the women’s and men’s indoor track and field national titles.
Both teams got their outdoor track seasons started last weekend.
In an email sent out to students, UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow congratulated the student athletes and their coaches, women’s head coach Nickolas Davis and men’s head coach Josh Buchholtz.
“It is no exaggeration to say we have the nation’s premiere NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field program right here on our UWL campus” Gow said.
UW-L has won an NCAA Division III record 18 indoor titles, including 11 of the last 19. They also have a nation-leading 33 national championships overall.
The university also opened a brand new, 49 million dollar fieldhouse at the beginning of the semester, which provided much needed practice space for the teams, as well as allowing the university to host indoor track and field meets.
Women’s head coach Nickolas Davis said that the new fieldhouse provided a “tremendous morale boost” for the teams.
