Aquinas-Mayville state championship rematch, as Blugolds look to repeat
The Aquinas High School football team is a day away from trying to become back-to-back state champions.
You can tune into Aquinas-Mayville on the WKTY App or on WIZM radio 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Pregame at 3:50 p.m. Thursday.
The Blugolds (12-1) are also in the midst of having won 28 of their past 29 games, as they get set for a rematch of last year’s Division 5 state title matchup.
At 4 p.m. Thursday at Camp Randall, Aquinas, ranked No. 3 in the Small Division to end the regular season, plays Mayville (13-0), which has won 24 of 26 games.
One of those losses, of course, came 28-26 in the 2021 state championship.
The Cardinals, who were ranked second in the Medium Division to end the year, edged Prairie du Chien 26-21 thanks to a fourth-quarter touchdown in the semifinals.
Before that, Mayville had shut out its past two opponents and averages 43 points a game this season. Meanwhile, Aquinas has won all its playoff games by an average of 26 points, including a 44-19 blowout in the semifinals.
A win for Aquinas would make it 3-for-3 in WIAA state championship games, having won both last year and in 2007. The Blugolds also won WISAA Division 2 titles in 1993 and 1995.
The only loss for Aquinas this season came 28-14 in the regular-season finale to West Salem (13-0), which finished the year ranked seventh (Medium) and is playing for a Division 3 state title at 10 a.m. Thursday.
