What’s on the table today?: My NBA Award Winners & Betting odds for each to win for REAL

  • MVP – Nikola Jokic -10000 (best odds BET MGM -5000) (Jokic led the league in double-doubles (55) and player efficiency (31.28, top-10 all-time) and was top-15 in five other categories – No. 2 in triple-doubles (15), seventh in assists per game (8.7), ninth in rebounds per game (10.9), 10th in points per game (26.2) and 14th in steals per game (1.4).

  • Defensive Player of the Year – Rudy Gobert -250 (2nd in the NBA in rebounds 13.5, 1st in blocks 2.7) Utah’s defense when Gobert is on the floor is 11.9 points better than when he’s off. Shooters fare 7.7% worse when he’s the one contesting their shots, and he tops the NBA in defensive field-goal attempts (19.1). His defensive rating is 100.9, his plus/minus for the season was plus-728 and his defensive win shares was 0.181, all per NBA.com/Stats.  Compare those numbers to Simmons, widely regarded as the league’s top on-ball defender with his capability of guarding all five positions. Here are the Philadelphia player’s respective stats by category: minus-0.4 net defensive rating, a 5.2% impact on shooters in the 9.9 shots he faces nightly. A 106.0 defensive rating, a 328 plus/minus and 0.140 defensive win shares.

  • Sixth Man – Jordan Clarkson -1000 (Despite his high-volume shooting, Jordan Clarkson is actually the most efficient bench scorer. He leads in the NBA in secondary scoring (18.4 points per game) while playing just 26.7 minutes per game. He also leads among NBA reserves in most 3-pointers (208) and 20-point plus games (24)

  • Rookie of the Year – Lamelo Ball -909 (LaMelo Ball joined Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler and Dejounte Murray as the only NBA players this season to average at least 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and 1.5 steals while playing in at least 70% of their team’s games.)

  • Coach of the Year – Monte Williams Phoenix Suns +650 (51-21 record / 2nd in the West, team hadn’t made the playoffs since 2010) **Seems like odds makers now favor Jazz coach Quin Snyder with his odds updated to -150**

  • Most Improved Player – Julius Randle -250 (Julius Randle’s year over year increase from 19.5 points per game to 24.1 is impressive but the improvement in 3-point shooting from 27.7% to 41.1% while taking nearly two more 3s per game this season made Randle the clear choice.  Julius Randle made his first All-Star appearance before becoming one of five players this season to average at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5.5 assists along with Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Russell Westbrook and Domantas Sabonis)
