That didn’t last long — Burnes’ strikeout record for Brewers broken five days after it’s set

First it was 19 years, then it was five days.

Last week, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes broke a record set 19 years ago for most consecutive strikeouts without a walk.

Burnes’ 58 consecutive strikeouts broke Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Curt Schilling’s 2002 record of 56.

Well, five days later, New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole broke Burnes’ record, in kind of off-putting fashion.

On a night when Cole gave up five earned runs on seven hits in five innings in a loss, he did get his 59th consecutive strikeout without a walk, on Joey Gallo of the Texas Rangers, to break Burnes’ record.

Cole extended the record — while also breaking Burnes’ other record — to 61 before walking Gallo in the third inning. It was Cole’s first walk since April 12.

While Cole holds both the record for most strikeouts without a walk at any point in the season, Burnes still holds the record for most strikeouts without a walk to begin a season.

Burnes moved past L.A. Dodgers reliever Kenley Jansen, who held the record at 51, set in 2017.
