How did I get here? On Tuesday I was taking a flyer on the Green Bay Phoenix to cover a rather large spread **(+24.5)** against the 4th ranked Badgers. That turned out to be a BIG mistake as the Wisconsin men simply beat-down the Green Bay Phoenix 82-42, obliterating any chance I had at a cover in the early second half.
**The point spread is the amount of points the odds-makers set as their predicted scoring margin between the two teams at play. A win is secured by either betting one team to WIN (the favored team) by more than the amount the odds-makers think will be the score differential (this is called the MINUS and looks like this; Wisconsin -24.5), or by betting that the opposing team who is predicted to lose, either lose by LESS than the scoring differential set, or with a straight win (this is called PLUS money and looks like this; Green Bay +24.5). If the two teams happen to land exactly on the score the odds-makers set as the differential (think Packers -7 vs Minnesota, and the final score being 24-17), in that case you have a PUSH which neither side is declared a winner and the bettor’s original wager is returned to the bettor**
What’s on the table tonight?: Another college hoops match up – this time the Michigan Wolverines led by Juwan Howard, versus Ball State. I don’t know much more about this Ball State team than I did about yesterday’s Green Bay team, and not much more about this years’ Michigan squad, but, I do know that when BETTING a game it’s more about the trend of the team, than the team itself.
Take a look at these numbers (ATS) Against the Spread (which is what we’re talking about when taking PLUS or MINUS money on a favorite or underdog) for both Ball State and Michigan. After you’re done with that, you’ll understand why I’m taking Michigan (-14.5) from Fox Bet this morning.
Ball State:
- 1-4 ATS in their last five games on the road.
- 1-4 ATS in their last five games against teams with a winning percentage greater than .600.
- 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games on the road against teams with a winning record at home.
Michigan:
- 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games on Wednesday.
- 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games.
- 23-11-1 ATS in their last 35 games at home.
