Badgers headed to Final Four, play No. 1 Baylor
The University of Wisconsin volleyball team is headed to the Final Four.
The Badgers swept their way to the semifinals Saturday with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-19) win over rival, sixth-ranked Nebraska.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, fourth-seeded Wisconsin will play the top seed in the entire tournament, No. 1-ranked Baylor (29-1) to begin the Final Four. Only the Top 16 teams are seeded for volleyball.
On the other half of the bracket, No. 7-ranked Minnesota (27-5) will take on third-ranked Stanford (28-4) at 8:30 p.m. The championship is at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The fifth-ranked Badgers (26-6) lost to the Bears 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 27-25, 27-17), who were ranked 17th at the time, back on Sept. 6 at the UW Field House.
That came a day after Wisconsin lost 3-2 to then 11th-ranked Marquette. Wisconsin lost those two games in a row, won two straight, then fell in back-to-back matches to No. 10 Washington 3-1 and 3-0 in a home-away matchup Sept. 19 and 21.
Since, the Badgers have won 22 of 24 matches, losing only to unranked Ohio State 3-1 and No. 8 Penn State 3-2. Both games were on the road.
In the tournament so far, Wisconsin has swept every time. It was the third time sweeping the Cornhuskers (28-5) this season.
Baylor’s only loss this season came 3-0 to then-ranked No. 4 Texas back on Oct. 23. In the tourney, the Bears have won their past two matches 3-1 over 16th-seeded Purdue and No. 8 Washington.
The Gophers beat the Cardinal 3-1 (27-25, 27-25, 23-25, 25-20) back on Sept. 14.
