MILWAUKEE (AP) — Officials in Milwaukee are already trying to get ahead of police video from the arrest of Bucks guard Sterling Brown in January.
“It was a disturbing video when I saw it, and I know that the police chief feels the same way,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett told the Milwaukee Journal on Tuesday. “And I don’t know exactly what actions his department is going to take, but it is disconcerting to see some of the actions in that video.
The video could be released Wednesday.
“I’m going to let the release of that speak for itself, but yes, I definitely have concerns after watching that video,” Barrett said.
Brown was not charged criminally. The incident happened around 2 a.m. Jan. 26. Police saw a vehicle taking up two handicap spots outside a Walgreens in Milwaukee.
After speaking with Brown, police eventually tased the 22-year-old during the encounter. He was arrested on possible misdemeanor for resisting / obstructing an officer. But, after an internal review, including the body-cam footage, police didn’t charge Brown. He was only cited for a parking violation.
Brown played in a game that day and had bruises and marks on his face. He told reporters it was a “personal issue,” at the time.
Police showed the body-cam footage to local officials, including a closed session of a Common Council committee.
The Bucks signed Brown, a 6-foot-6 guard out of Southern Methodist University, last summer in a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, who drafted him with the 46th overall pick.
