Brewers’ Yelich, Contreras blanked in all-star game; Burnes hugs old catcher, after comebacker for out from Contreras
William Contreras and Christian Yelich batted fifth and sixth in the order for the National League in the all-star game Tuesday, but both went 0-for-2 in a 5-3 losing effort.
Contreras and Yelich were the only two Brewers on the all-star roster.
Former Brewers pitcher and Cy Young winner, Corbin Burnes, who started for the AL, arrived in Texas the morning of the game, after spending time at home with his newborn twin daughters.
The Baltimore righty allowed a walk, then a two-out double to Bryce Harper before getting out of his inning on a comebacker by Contreras, his catcher last season in Milwaukee.
After his underhand toss of the ball to first base, Burnes had a big smile on his face when he kept jogging and wrapped his arm around Contreras on the baseline (pictured above).
It was Yelich’s third all-star appearance, but first since back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019.
Contreras was playing in his second-ever all-star game. His other appearance was for the Atlanta Braves in 2021, before being traded to Milwaukee in 2023.
Jarren Duran essentially won the game with a tiebreaking two-run homer in the fifth inning. He was named all-star MVP.
