April 2024’s WKTY Cares donation is to the Wisconsin Conservation Corps (WCC).

The WCC is a division of WisCorps, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides conservation and environmental education service opportunities for AmeriCorps members.

Through their Crew Program and Individual Placement Program, they empower people to develop life-changing skills and connections while working to conserve and enhance our natural resources through collaboration, community, equity, and inclusion.

Thanks to sponsors, Performance Foods Service and Kratt Lumber, WKTY Cares is proud to make a $1,000 donation to support their work in our community.

WCC’s Crew Program will complete 80 field weeks in 2024, spread across four summer crews and four fall crews. Leader positions run from April 30th -November 20th and span both the summer and fall field sessions. Summer Member positions run from May 28th to August 16th, and the Fall Member positions run from September 10th to November 15th.

They will partner with the City of La Crosse Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department for three weeks in June 2024. Field services will be done in conjunction with local nonprofits Friends of the Blufflands, Friends of the La Crosse River Marsh, and Outdoor Recreation Alliance (ORA Trails).

A few of their non-La Crosse project partners include The Ice Age Trail Alliance, Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and Isle Royale National Park!

All Crew Program participants are provided with room and board (mostly camping!) and receive a weekly living stipend. After the successful completion of their term, participants are issued an education award for future education expenses or existing student loans (if they are through a federal loan provider). Leaders undergo a month-long onboarding that includes various certifications including Chainsaw Safety, WI Pesticide Applicator, and Wilderness First Aid & CPR.
