The UW-La Crosse football team won its first two conference games by scores of 45-40 and 37-34, respectively.

Saturday, the defense stepped up big in a 21-17 win over UW-Platteville.

No. 6 UW-L (5-1, 3-0) scored the final points of the game with 1:13 remaining in the 3rd quarter, when Jack Studer hauled in a one-handed touchdown grab from Zach Weir.

The Eagles defense would force a 3-and-out, a turnover on downs, and two interceptions in the 4th quarter coming from unlikely sources — Henry Walsh and Nate Hietpas, both defensive lineman.

UW-L quarterback Keyser Helterbrand finished 15-for-25 for 209 yards and a touchdown in the air and one on the ground.

Weir, who played the majority of the 2nd half, was 3-for-4 for 43 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagle defense has three sacks — two in the fourth.

UW-L will host UW-Oshkosh next Saturday. WKTY will stream live, beginning at 12:45 p.m.
