The Rangers had a four-point lead with 2:37 remaining. All Logan had to do was recover an onside kick run out the clock. In fact, Memorial’s onside kick didn’t even go 10 yards, so the Rangers just needed to stay away from the ball.
Instead, one of Logan’s players, perhaps seeing a wide-open field, ran up and tried to pick up the football, as it slowly rolled to a stop. Eau Claire recovered and drove down for the winning score.
The Rangers kept their composure, however, and drove 43 yards, down to the 12, with 30 seconds remaining, but missed a 29-yard winning field goal with 3 seconds remaining.
UPDATE: Coming up this week on WKTY, Holmen’s home-opener begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday against River Falls. The Vikings lost to Chippewa Falls 17-14 last Thursday.
Also on Friday night, Onalaska will host Medford. Both teams are looking for their first win, as the Hilltoppers lost their season-opener last week 35-28 to West Salem.
