A 22-point deficit didn’t seem to matter much to the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team.
The 17th-ranked Badgers went on an 11-0 run against Indiana to close out the game and pull out the Big 10 opening win, 64-59 on Wednesday from the Kohl Center.
This Johnny Davis 3-pointer with 1:18 remaining gave Wisconsin (8-1) the lead back for the first time since early in the first half.
Along with the 11-0 run, the Badgers, who have now won six consecutive games, outscored the Hoosiers (7-2) 16-2 over the last 5:50.
“It’s easier to play when you’re down because then you get more aggressive,” Davis said.
The La Crosse native led Wisconsin with 23 points, nine rebounds — tying a career high — an assist, a block and three turnovers. The sophomore shot 8 of 17 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. No other Badger scored in double digits.
In fact, while Davis shot 47.1% from the field, the rest of the team shot 35.6% (16-for-45).
While Wisconsin was down 42-20 late in the first half, it was still losing by 18 with under 18 remaining. The comeback is tied for the biggest in school history. Back on Jan. 5, 1976, the Badgers came back from 22 down to beat Ohio State 82-81.
Some more history in the making — this was also the Badgers 19th consecutive home win over Indiana, dating back to 1998 — the first year of the Kohl Center.
“That’s before I was born, and everyone says I’m super old,” fifth-year senior Brad Davison said.
