No. 6 Badgers fall to Terps, snapping 15-gm home win streak
Another upset against the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team, just as it was back to being ranked one of the top teams in the country.
Earlier Monday, the Badgers hit No. 6 in the polls, only to suffer a 70-64 loss to Maryland later in the day, seeing their 10-game conference win streak stopped, as well as their 15-game home win streak.
La Crosse native Jonathan Davis had four points, three rebounds and a turnover in 18 minutes for Wisconsin. The freshman was 2-for-3 from the field, missing a 3-pointer. It’s just the second game this season, Davis didn’t record a block, steal or assist. He’s recorded two of three of those stats in all but two games, as well.
On Dec. 4, Wisconsin was the No. 4 team in the country, only to lose at the buzzer on an offensive putback after a missed free throw to Marquette.
This time, it was less dramatic. The Terrapins (6-3, 1-2) outscored the Badgers in the paint 38-20, holding Nate Reuvers and Micah Potter to just 12 points on 6-of-18 shooting.
Wisconsin (8-2, 2-1) shot just 38.1% from beyond the arc (8 of 21) and 8-for-15 from the free throw line (53.3%). Maryland hit 12 of its 15 free throws, and didn’t shoot much better from deep (6-for-17) but did hit 50% of his field goals (26 of 52).
D’Mitrik Trice hit a 3-pointer with just under 2 minutes to play, pulling the Badgers within 60-59, but Maryland hit back-to-back shots and then free throws to push the lead back to seven.
Trice led Wisconsin with 25 points.
