MVC championship comes down to Onalaska at Holmen on WKTY Friday
The Mississippi Valley Conference championship comes down to Onalaska at Holmen in the regular-season finale and you can watch right here on WKTY.
Last season, these teams tied for a conference crown. Won’t happen this year. Both have 5-1 MVC records heading into Friday’s 7 p.m. matchup.
Holmen (5-3, 5-1) struggled last week against Sparta’s defense in a 28-6 surprising loss that opened the door to for the Hilltoppers (6-2, 5-1) to win the MVC outright.
This matchup came in Week 3 last season and Holmen ended up with the 56-29 win. That turned up costly for Onalaska, which ran the table the rest of the season and could have had the MVC title to itself.
“That option attack that Holmen runs is different,” Onalaska coach Tom Yashinsky said. “That’s one that’s always give us trouble and it gives a lot of people trouble.
“So, you have to play really disciplined football. You can’t just chase after the ball because they hide the ball really well with the option.”
Onalaska’s had some close games this season, including the last two weeks coming down to the final play. The Hilltoppers went 1-1 in those games, beating West Salem 21-20 and losing to Central 35-31.
