Aquinas football to compete in Coulee Conference in 2020
The Wisconsin High School Coaches Association has said its piece about all the conference realignment talk for football going on in the state.
In it, Aquinas would compete in the Coulee Conference starting in 2020, which is a lot closer to home than its current situation.
Right now, the Blugolds are scheduled to compete in another league that would have them compete against teams like Cuba City and Mineral Point.
All scenarios are favorable to their current one in the Mississippi Valley Conference says Aquinas coach Tom Lee.
“It’s been super super difficult for us to be competiitve there,” he said. “Football is certainly a numbers game and this helps us match up numbers wise better against schools that we’re competing against.”
Lee says the repetitive losing seasons makes it difficult to have players come out for the team, which exasperates the problem.
Evening out roster sizes as compared to other schools will help restore some competitive balance. With that, students should start to come out for the sport.
“It’s tough to convince (14-17) year old boys, ‘Come learn a tough lesson,'” Lee said. “And, sometimes it’s hard to convince parents, like, ‘This is a danger,’ and we’re telling you that we’re going to take care of your kdis but there’s some stuff that’s out of our control.”
The Bluegolds had to forefit a game back in 2016 because they didn’t have enough capable, healthy players on the roster.
