CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Another ranked opponent took down the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team Monday.
No. 18 Virginia got 17 points from Kyle Guy in a 49-37 win at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
La Crosse native Kobe King played 21 minutes off the bench, going 1-for-3 from the field. He had two points, a steal and an assist.
The Badgers (3-4) went over 7 minutes in the second half without scoring, after being down 24-20 at the break.
Devon Hall score 16 for the Cavaliers (7-0), who went on a 12-0 run during that UW scoreless timeframe to take a 42-26 with 10:30 remaining.
Ethan Happ led Wisconsin with 14 points and D’Mitrik Trice added 10, but the Badgers shot poorly all night.
After arriving at John Paul Jones Arena averaging 75 points for the season, Wisconsin got half that and finished 15 of 48 from the field (31 percent).
Virginia wasn’t much better, going 23 of 60 (38.7 percent).
And both teams were horrendous from beyond the arc, combining to shoot 6 of 34. Virginia did outrebound the Badgers 39-30 and outscored them 34-18 in the paint.
THE BIG PICTURE
Wisconsin: The Badgers are young, having lost five seniors from last year’s team. They have also played a difficult early schedule with four games against ranked teams, and they lost the first three before coming to Virginia, which debuted in the AP Top 25 on Monday. Ethan Happ had his way against Jack Salt, but Happ also was whistled for two first-half fouls.
