Heath heartbroken in U.S. qualifier
Winona native misses World Championships by .07 seconds
EUGENE, Ore. – Garrett Heath came as close as ever to representing the United States track and field team.
The Winona, Minn., native came seven-hundredths of a second from qualifying for the U.S. team in the 5,000-meter at the USATF championships at historic Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus Sunday.
The U.S. team takes the Top 3 from each event. Heath finished fourth in 13 minutes, 51.61 seconds. Third place came in 13:51.54.
In 2012, Heath competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 1,500. He now sets his sites on Rio de Janeiro and the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Heath is a 2004 Winona Senior High School graduate who went on to become a 9-time all-American at Stanford – not to mention he’s close to getting his doctorate there, too. The eight-time Minnesota state champion (two in cross country, two in Nordic skiing, two in the 1,600 and two in the 3,200) now competes professionally for Brooks Running out of Seattle, Wash.
