UW-La Crosse hosts in first-ever Sweet 16 in hoops, while wrestling, T&F compete in DIII championships
Just a couple things happening this weekend, starting Friday, for UW-La Crosse athletics, and it’s hard to know who to bring up first.
The men’s and women’s track & field teams are competing in the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships in New York.
The wrestling team has nine athletes competing in the DIII championships in Rhode Island.
And, the fifth-ranked men’s basketball team is hosting the Sweet 16 of the DIII tournament, opening at 7 p.m. Friday with No. 9 Illinois Wesleyan at Mitchell Hall.
Back to T&F, the men’s team is looking for back-to-back national titles, while the women are trying to win for the second time in three years.
In wrestling, UW-L has 24 Top 10 finishes at the national championships since joining the NCAA DIII in 1992. That includes a school-best second-place showing in 2001, 2006, 2008 and 2010.
The Eagles have claimed 22 (14 wrestlers) individual champions.
And, back to men’s basketball, this is the furthest in school history the Eagles have gotten in the tournament. They are also looking to pad their most wins in school history, currently sitting at 24-5.
