Onalaska’s Donarski scores 12, but No. 13 UNC falls to FSU in final seconds
Onalaska native Lexi Donarksi had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, but her 13th-ranked North Carolina women’s basketball team lost on a bucket in the final seconds Sunday, snapping a five-game win streak.
Ta’niya Latson, who leads the nation in scoring, hit a layup with four seconds left to give Florida State the 86-84 win.
Latson, who averages 26.6 points, scored 25 to go with eight assists for the Seminoles (16-4), who have not lost in Chapel Hill since 2015.
Florida State had a 65-62 lead into the fourth, but Maria Gakdeng scored the first eight points for North Carolina (18-4) and Donarski followed with a 3-pointer to give the Tar Heels a 73-69 lead with 6:53 remaining.
Down the stretch, Gakdeng put UNC up 82-81 with 18 seconds left, but FSU answered with a 3-pointer. The Tar Heels went back up by two with a layup with 7 seconds left, but that was enough time for Florida State.
The matchup featured 16 lead changes and four ties through the first three quarters.
Donarski shot 5 of 12 from the field and 2-for-7 from deep but did have four turnovers. She had gone three consecutive games both leading UNC in scoring, as well as hitting five 3-pointers in each game.
North Carolina is back in action on the road against No. 22 Cal (18-3) at 9 p.m. Thursday.
