It’s been quite the turnaround for the La Crosse Central Riverhawks football team this season. Central went 0-2 in the non-conference while being outscored 65-14. Since then, Central is 4-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference and are tied with Logan and Holmen for first in the race for a conference championship.

The Riverhawks hope to continue their great play on Friday against Sparta (3-4, 1-4) at Roger Harring Stadium on a game broadcast live on WKTY.

Central’s resurgence is due in large part to the improved play of Quarterback Christian Rudrud, who has started in place of the injured Jude Alvarado.

Rudrud in non-conference play threw for 106 yards and ran for 70 with zero touchdowns. In the five games since then, he’s accounted for 14 total touchdowns, and more than 700 yards rushing. The 36 points that Central put up in their win last week over Holmen, is the least amount of points they’ve produced in the conference season.

Alvarado has played sparingly the last two weeks, throwing 6 total passes, 4 of them for touchdowns.

The Riverhawks will finish up their season on the road at Logan next week, in the Battle for the Ark and a possible conference championship. Central, Logan, and Holmen are all at the top of the standings.
