Loggers get 8th straight, but only after Peck gives La Crosse heart attack in final half inning
The winning streak almost came to an end Tuesday for the La Crosse Loggers baseball team.
Maddax Peck got the save in the 4-3 win over Duluth, but basically gave his team a heart attack first.
With a two-run lead in the final inning, Peck started off with a walk, then gave up a single, before loading the bases by hitting a batter.
The Huskies pulled within a run on the next at-bat with an RBI single, before Peck locked in with three consecutive strikeouts to end the game.
The insurance RBI double in the top of the seventh and final inning by Case Sanderson ended up being needed to secure an eighth consecutive win for the Loggers.
Sanderson ended up with two RBI in the win, as the Loggers pushed their Great Plains East Division lead to two games.
The Loggers also won Game 1 of the doubleheader with Duluth, 13-12 in 10 innings, where R.J. Hamilton was 3-for-6 with two RBI. La Crosse scored two in the top of the 10th, including a Derrick Mitchell RBI double to start things off.
He later stole second base and Duluth committed an error, allowing the eventual winning run. Duluth scored on a wild pitch to pull within one in the bottom of the 10th. La Crosse was down 10-6 heading into the seventh inning before scoring one there, and four more in the eight to tie things up.
Last season, La Crosse was the worst team in the division for the first half of the season, before getting within a win of the Northwoods World Series.
