Onalaska’s Putz, Richgels lead boys, girls teams to Top 5 finishes at state; Holmen’s Lazarescu sweeps the sprints
The Onalaska High School boys track and field team, led by three event titles, took second place in the Division 1 state meet over the weekend, while the Hilltopper girls took fourth, and Holmen saw a sophomore bring home two championships at UW-La Crosse.
Junior Manny Putz was involved in all three Onalaska titles, winning both the 1,600 and 3,200 runs, as well as being part of the 3,200 relay, along with senior teammates Kasey Barth, Drew Symons and Blake Burnstad.
Burnstad also took third in the 800, while senior Max Erdmann scored with a sixth-place finish in the triple jump.
The Hilltoppers scored 44 points, while Arrowhead won the meet with 60.
Meanwhile, Central senior Aaron Poelma took fourth in the 110 hurdles and eighth in the 300 hurdles, and senior teammate Alex Wagner finished sixth in the pole vault.
On the girls side, the Hilltoppers as a team finished fourth — two points from second place — led by four trips to the podium from Jenna Richgels.
The senior took third in the triple jump, eighth in the 1000 and was part of both the 400- and 1,600-relay teams, that took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Also on that 400 relay was juniors Ella Stevens and Eliana Mascotti and sophomore Makena McGarry. The rest of the 1,600 relay for Onalaska consisted of McGarry, Eva Dryer and Malecek.
McGarry also place fifth in the long jump, while teammates Kendall Carlson and Malecek placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the high jump.
Last but not least, Holmen finished seventh overall as a team thanks Lydia Lazarescu in the 100 and 200.
Senior teammate Jadyn Roden took fifth in the discus, while sophomore Brenna Schmidt placed sixth in the shot put.
