Onalaska was hot after Day 1 of the Wisconsin high school state track & field meet at UW-La Crosse, but it was Bangor senior Sam Crenshaw that took center stage.

The Hilltoppers finished with two Division 1 event titles, while Luther took home a Division 3 win.

Crenshaw defended his pole vault title, setting a Division 3 record at 16 feet, 6 inches.

But he was sort of pitted against Big Foot’s Kaden Rambatt, who was vaulting on the adjacent pit in Division 2. The two kept raising the bar — pun intended. Rambatt finished with an all-divisions meet record (17-2). That height is the fifth-best in the nation.

Meanwhile, Onalaska junior Manny Putz won the 3,200 in 9 minutes, 8.75 seconds and also ran with teammates Kasey Barth, Drew Symons and Blake Burnstad to take the 3,200 relay (7:47.49).
