No. 16 UW-L baseball faces 5th-ranked UW-Whitewater in bid to get back to College World Series
A wild open to the Division III college baseball playoffs last weekend for the 15th-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team.
The Eagles went 4-1, scoring 75 runs in just five games to move onto the Super Regional in Whitewater, Wis., beginning Friday. A couple wins there and UW-L will be headed back to the Division III College World Series for the second-consecutive season.
UW-L (35-14) fought its way out of the losers’ bracket to win their DIII regional at Copeland Park last weekend, defeating Coe twice Sunday in the double-elimination tournament.
Now, the Eagles hit the road to face fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater (38-8). The Warhawks are 4-1 against UW-L this season.
The first game is set for noon Friday, with Game 2 at 11 a.m. Saturday. If a Game 3 is necessary, it will be played Saturday, as well.
To get out of the regional, UW-L beat Coe 18-11 in the first game Sunday, then 9-7 in nine innings in Game 2.
Coe (31-16) had sent the Eagles (35-14) to the elimination round Saturday with a 12-11 win in 10 innings. The Eagles kept their season alive beating Benedictine 18-15 after that. UW-L opened the tournament beating Bethel 19-2.
This is UW-L’s eighth NCAA tourney appearance. Last season, it went 3-1 in the regional, before beating UW-Stevens Point 2-1 in the super regional to qualify for the World Series.
The Eagles went 0-2 in getting eliminated from the World Series.
