An interesting workshop Thursday at the La Crosse YMCA tomorrow that will focus on “the timing of food” — what to eat and when to eat it, before heading into an activity.

YMCA wellness coordinator Dr. Gretchen Newhouse and Food Forest coordinator Laurie Nelson will lead the discussion, which happens at both 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. tomorrow and is open to the public.

On La Crosse Talk PM, the two gave a bit of a preview on the topic — like what you need to eat before lifting or before playing a basketball game.

But, of course, we looked at it from the opposite perspective in the most ridiculous way.

La Crosse Talk PM airs weekdays at 5:06 p.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Find all the podcasts here or subscribe to La Crosse Talk PM wherever you get your podcasts.

With the Super Bowl coming up, instead of, for example, looking into what a marathoner should eat before those 26.2 miles, how about what someone should do in preparation for a marathon of eating — that’s for sure to happen Sunday.

“Doing some sort of fun activity with the group of others that you’re with,” Newhouse said. “Doing some sit-ups, push-ups, jumping jacks for every touchdown. Making it some sort of fun activity so you’re not sedentary the entire Super Bowl.”

Nelson said she’s done something like prop bets, but with workouts.

“There was this list that, if this happened, you did so many burpees,” Nelson said.

So, for every interception, people at the Super Bowl party might have to run around the house or do 25 jumping jacks.

The two then laughed at the concept, as they may be a little more motivated than the typical person pigging out at a Super Bowl party, who has no intention of moving any further than to the plate of chicken wings on the table.
