Onalaska wins third game by 1 point, clinches share of MVC title
In its five-game winning streak heading into Friday night, the Onalaska High School football team had won two games by a point.
That trend continued against Baraboo, when the Hilltoppers stopped a two-point conversion with 1:30 left to take the game 21-20.
Down seven with 2:47 remaining, the Thunderbirds (5-3, 4-2) drove 63 yards — 47 of which came on two plays — and scored, to pull within a point.
Instead of kicking for the tie, though, they went for two. On the quarterback draw, however, Onalaska stuffed the run for a loss of 2 yards, essentially preserving the win.
Entering the fourth quarter, Onalaska (6-2, 6-0) found itself down 14-7 before getting to work.
Running back Brady Kuhn, playing in just his third game of the season after injuries kept him out, tied things at 14-14 with a 4-yard touchdown on the opening play of the fourth.
The Hilltoppers forced a turnover on the downs near midfield with 8:40 left on the next possession to set up the winning drive.
It took 11 plays and 3 minutes, 43 seconds off the clock, before Brodie Mickshl put Onalaska on top with his second touchdown reception — albeit a short one from quarterback Adam Skifton. The eventual winning touchdown was a 1-yarder.
The two began Onalaska’s scoring in somewhat dramatic fashion, connecting on a 24-yard score that included an incredible diving grab by Mickshl. That capped off a 7-play, 63-yard drive.
Skifton finished 19 of 27 for 202 yards and Mickshl ended with nine catches for 88 yards.
The Hilltoppers take on Tomah next Friday, while Baraboo is at Sparta
