Isaac Skemp’s one-handed grab on the winning two-point conversion with 9 seconds to go, gave the Onalaska High School football team a 29-28 win over Central on Friday.

The Hilltoppers (2-2, 2-0) elected to go for two, after Skemp caught a 9-yard touchdown from Adam Skifton capping off an eight-play, 59-yard drive that began with 4:09 remaining on the clock.

Before the winning drive, the Riverhawks (3-1, 1-1) took the lead when Jude Alvarado hit Kaeden Aupaun for a 9-yard score to make it 28-21. That possession was set up by Central linebacker Antoine Hardie’s interception.

The fourth quarter started with the teams tied 14-14 and Alvarado hitting Christian Rudrud for a 27-yard score to take the lead.

The Hilltoppers answered back just plays later on a 75-yard touchdown from Skifton to Mickschl.

Skifton finished with four touchdown passes and 213 yards in the air — most of which went to Mickschl, who finished with nine catches, 144 yards and three of those touchdowns.

Alvarado finished with three touchdowns, two interceptions 79 yards passing and 98 more rushing.

While the two teams were tied at half and did the rest of the scoring in a wild fourth, even the final minutes of the first half were a prelude of things to come.

Mickschl struck pay dirt from 15 out with 1:42 left in the half, giving Onalaska a 14-6 lead. But that left Alvardo and Central too much time. The senior QB capped off a five-play, 51-yard, with an 11-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion to tie it.
