WATCH: Fielding nails 3 to send Central to D2 state championship
With his team down two under 30 seconds to play in the state semifinals, a 3-pointer by Devon Fielding ended up being the winner.
Central came back from 10 down late in the WIAA Division 2 semifinal to move onto the state championship with a 52-51 victory over Westosha Central, but it could have very well been the other way over those final seconds. Central will play second-ranked Pewaukee (26-3) at 6:35 p.m. Saturday.
After Fielding’s 3-pointer from the corner, Westosha Central’s Jack Rose had an open layup for the win with 6 seconds left but missed.
Noah Compan came down with the rebound for the Riverhawks, and went to the line for a 1-and-1 to seal it with 4 seconds remaining. Compan missed and Rose got the rebound.
But, with no timeouts left, he only had the ability to heave a three-quarter court shot at the buzzer — a shot that was blocked by Compan, and the celebration began.
Fielding ended up with 20 points, while Compan had 17 for the Riverhawks, who were down 48-38 with 6:48 remaining in the game.
Fielding, though, started and ended a 13-3 run to complete the comeback. He had five points, Compan had four and Prestasky added bucket and the foul — his only basket coming at one of the most important times of the game.
Fielding finished 9-for-19 from the floor and had seven rebounds. Compan was 8-for-13. Central shot 23-for-50 from the field (46%), while Westosha was 20-for-45 (45.5%).
The Riverhawks outrebounded Westosha 30-21.
