NBA Finals Game 2: Betting Preview

Dave Carney 7/7/2021

What’s on the table today?: Bucks (+5.5) at Suns (-5.5) / total 221 / NBA Finals Game 2: Betting Preview.

In Tuesday’s Game 1, the Phoenix Suns beat the Bucks 118-105, covering the (-5.5) line prior to tip despite the surprise return of Giannis to the Bucks lineup.

Yesterday, not loving the Bucks or the Suns on the points, I took the Suns to cover (-2) first quarter points, which they did with a 30-26 lead heading into the 2nd.

Tomorrow night on WKTY (pregame 7:30p / tip-off 8p) the Bucks will be back in the “Valley of Sun” for Game 2 and a chance to even the series at 1-1.  For the Bucks to win, a number of things will have to happen, but most importantly it will be slowing down Chris Paul who had an NBA Finals debut of 32 points and 9 assists, Devin Booker who scored 27, and DeAndre Ayton who was uber efficient with 22 points and 19 rebounds.

The energy level for the Bucks, which has been a concern numerous times throughout the Playoffs so far, has got to increase five-fold as well. If Milwaukee doesn’t come out of the gates ROARING with energy in Game 2, look for the Suns to make a major push to put this game away early. If the Bucks do however play with the kind of intention and purpose they’ve shown at various points versus the Nets and Hawks most recently, they will have more than a puncher’s chance of winning, or at the very least COVERING the (+5.5) spread.

Recent trends have shown us that the Bucks are a “bounce-back” type of team, and looking at the info provided by Covers.com I think you can make a good case (at least a decent case) for the Bucks to at least cover the (+5.5):

  • Bucks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS loss.
  • Bucks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall

There is also some strong indications that Thursday’s Game 2 will go UNDER the total of 221. In Game 1 the total, set at 219 did go OVER, however these recent trends for the Bucks are leaning the other way:

  • Under is 5-1 in Bucks last 6 games following a ATS loss.
  • Under is 8-1 in Bucks last 9 games following a straight up loss

While I’m going to wait until tomorrow to make my official prediction, my early thoughts are to take the Bucks (+5.5) and parlay that with the UNDER 221. Again, I will wait until tomorrow morning to decide, give myself a few extra hours to ponder this, but if you’re FEELING the Bucks right now, don’t wait too long for this number to move and grab it now at (+5.5).
