Today in sports history: USA beats U.S.S.R. in the “Miracle on Ice”

This morning in our “This Day in Sports History” segment I noted that today, in 1980, the USA stunned the heavily favored Russian squad 4-3 to advance to the Gold Medal round.
The Russians were a four-time defending Gold Medal team and realistically, nobody gave the USA a shot to beat them. However, the reason sports are played are for stories like this. Overcoming all odds, facing the biggest and baddest competition, and winning, all while lifting a nation watching. Classic. Epic. Historic.
Today we celebrate the 1980 USA Men’s Hockey team, and one of the greatest sports stories of the 20th Century with the “Miracle on Ice”.
