A big matchup at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for the 19th-ranked University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team hosting No. 12 Illinois.

La Crosse native Jonathan Davis is coming off a career game. The freshman scored a career-high 17 points in 18 minutes in the 72-56 win over Penn State on Tuesday.

Not only that, the 6-foot-5 guard had a career high in 3-pointers, going 4-for-4, field goals made — he was 6 of 7. He tied his high in steals at three and, not to rain on the parade, but he also had a career high six turnovers.

The 3-pointers came out of nowhere. Davis hadn’t hit one since Dec. 22, going 0-for-8, and was shooting just 23.5% from beyond the arc — 41.4% from the field.

The 17 points were more than double the output he had in any of his past 12 games. He’s scored double-digits three time now, including 12 against both Loyola-Chicago and Marquette back in mid-December.

Davis is averaging 6.6 points. He is tied for second on the team in rebounds (4.4), fifth in minutes (23.5) and averaging 1.6 blocks/steals a game.

He’s only had one game this season where he hasn’t had a block or a steal.
