Postseason cancelled in DIII sports, La Crosse loses wrestling National Championship
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men’s basketball team won its season-opener Wednesday, but there will be no postseason or championships.
All Division III winter playoffs and national championships were cancelled, the NCAA announced Wednesday.
It’s a bit of a blow for the city, which was going to be hosting the national wrestling championships March 12-13 at the La Crosse Center.
Eagles’ basketball seasons will be limited to eight WIAC games, while the wrestling season has five conference duals.
UW-L indoor track and field have five meets, while swimming and diving have four duals.
The NCAA Championships Committee cited data that showed participation numbers in all nine winter sports are “well below the established threshold to provide a national championships experience.”
Those thresholds:
- 60% percent for men’s and women’s basketball
- 60% swimming and diving
- 60% indoor track and field
- 70 percent for men’s and women’s ice hockey
- 70% wrestling.
Wrestling was 8% from hitting the threshold.
The Eagles beat UW-Eau Claire 62-43 to open the season.
