Brewers get Orioles Schoop in 4-player deal
The Milwaukee Brewers have traded for Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop.
Milwaukee gave up infielders Jonathan Villar, Jean Carmona, and right-hander Luis Ortiz.
The 26-year-old Schoop, along with Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich, were both MLB players of the week last week for their respective leagues.
Schoop had a breakout 2017 season during that earned him an All-Star appearance, and is signed through next season through arbitration on his rookie deal.
This season, Schoop has under performed until lately. So far he has a 244/.273/.447 slash line with 17 home runs. In July, however, he has nine homers to go with a .360/.356/.700 line.
Milwaukee has been active this trade deadline, adding reliever Joakim Soria and Mike Moustakas.
The switch-hitting Villar is two years removed from pacing the league in stolen bases with 62. However, an inability to reach base – with a .302 OBP since the beginning of 2017 – led to the speedster becoming a bench player.
Meanwhile, the right-handed Ortiz is posting a 3.71 ERA and 3.85 FIP over 68 innings with Double-A Biloxi. Prior to the deal, Ortiz was ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Brewers farm system, per MLB Pipeline.
Carmona, the No. 14 organizational prospect for Milwaukee, is an 18-year-old currently at rookie ball for the second consecutive year. Over 39 games, the shortstop possesses a .239/.298/.406 slash line with four home runs and five stolen bases.
At one game back of the division-leading Chicago Cubs, the Brewers currently occupy the top National League wild-card spot.
