Saturday could be the first real test for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team, as it’s set to open conference at UW-Stevens Point.
So far, the 3-0 Eagles have outscored their opponents 113-to-28. Those opponents, however, have a combined 3-and-6 record.
The Pointers and the Eagles sport the WIAC’s top two passing offenses, respectively.
But, UW-SP’s starting quarterback went down with an injury early last week and never returned. His status is still uncertain. The sophomore backup did throw four touchdowns, however, in a double-overtime win.
UW-L quarterback Tarek Yaeggi has completed 69 percent of his passing for 933 yards this season. He has eight touchdowns and two interceptions.
Nearly half those yards and over half those touchdowns have gone to one receiver. Nick Holcomb, a 6-2 senior, has 21 receptions for 405 yards and five touchdowns. He is averaging 19.3 yards per catch.
And, with the UW-SP quarterback injured, perhaps it’s at wide receiver there where the big matchup might be worth paying attention to.
Holcomb is tied for second in the WIAC in receptions with UW-SP’s Jeremy Williams. Holcomb sits behind the WIAC-leading Williams in yards and scoring.
Williams six touchdown receptions leads the WIAC in scoring, while Holcomb is right behind him with those five TDs.
The Eagles have given up just 28 points in its first three games but the Pointers could test that, averaging 36 points per game.
Neither team is ranked in the Top 25 in Division 3.
The only two WIAC teams that are ranked: UW-Oshkosh (third) and UW-Platteville (10th).
