Koelbl retires as UW-La Crosse men’s basketball coach after 14 seasons
Just weeks before the season begins, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men’s basketball team will be in search of a new coach.
Ken Koelbl announced his resignation Thursday, after 14 seasons with the Eagles.
UW-L will put an interim coach in place for this season and conduct a national search for a full-time coach afterward.
“I understand the timing is not right for this position, but it was right for me,” Koelbl said in a statement.
Koelbl compiled an overall record of 201-161 (.555), which is second all time at the school.
Koelb was the WIAC coach of the year in 2015-16, as the Eagles won the conference for the first time since 1965 going 16-10 overall and 10-4 in the WIAC.
UW-L had nine winning season in the past 12 years under Koelbl, advancing to the WIAC tournament six times, including three of the last four seasons.
A total of 30 All-WIAC selections were earned under Koelbl, including 15 first team choices
