Wisconsin, Notre Dame rumors of a football series brewing

Teams haven’t played each other since 1964.

The University of Wisconsin and Notre Dame are apparently trying to work out a football series between each other.

A series in which the games would be split between Green Bay’s Lambeau Field and Soldier Field in Chicago.

The teams have not met since 1964.

Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy said: “I would say we’ve been working on that for a while and I’m very, hopefully very soon we’ll be able to make an announcement.”

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said Monday at Big Ten media days in Chicago: “I don’t know where all those conversations are at, but I think it could be pretty cool.”

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, who has tried to play the Irish in the past, was an assistant under Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz from 1987-89.

A reporter said to Alvarez he hoped the teams would play in a series and Alvarez replied: “Me too,” according to the Chicago Tribune.

He’s yet to make it happen.

Why the series would take place at these venues is a tad confusing — or at least half the equation is.

It makes some sense to play the game at Lambeau. Even for the players, who wouldn’t want to play one “home” game a year there? The Badgers beat LSU at Lambeau Field last season.

But Notre Dame playing a “home” game at Soldier Field seems odd for a team based in South Bend, Ind.

It saves Notre Dame about 60 miles, rather than playing at the Indianapolis Colts stadium. But, are these teams really taking buses to games anymore?
