Weekend full of surprises: Garza plays for Brewers still and Thames drug tested again
That’s four drug tests this season for 30-year-old
Matt Garza still plays for the Milwaukee Brewers and Eric Thames is still getting drug tested.
Milwaukee could only take 1 of 3 from the Atlanta Braves over the weekend – a 4-3 win Sunday with Garza on the mound.
Friday, Thames went just 1-for-4. That one wasn’t a home run. But, lo and behold, the MLB’s random drug test policy came up Thames-Thames-Thames again on the slot machine (I don’t know, come up with a dumber analogy).
It was his third drug test in 10 days – fourth of the season, including spring training – and second in less than a week, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
To be clear about frequent tests, Thames isn’t upset. Actually seems amused. But you’d have a hard time selling the “random” part to him.

Thames was last tested Tuesday, when he hit his MLB-lead tying 11th home run of the season, when he joked – Band-aid on arm – about being pricked again.
#Brewers Eric Thames might have been wrong when he said “I have plenty of blood and urine.” Tested last nite for third time in 10 days.

We’ll see what this week brings, as the Brewers open a four-game series at St. Louis, beginning at 8:15 p.m. tonight – listen right here on WKTY 96.7 FM / 580 AM.
Whether Ryan Braun plays is up in the air, however. The 33-year-old left Sunday’s game early with what was initially the ole’ right trapezius soreness. But, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, Braunt is suffereing from additional arm injuries, though he hopes to avoid the disabled list.
Perhaps he sits the St. Louis series and retakes the field when Garza is back on the mound for the third time this season to open a three-game stint at Pittsburgh, beginning at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
