Top-ranked Blugolds (26-0) take on 18-8 Shiocton

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Aquinas High School girls basketball team puts its perfect
season on the line tonight, in trying to get to the state championship.

At 8:15 p.m. from the Resch Center, No. 1-ranked Blugolds (26-0) take on Shiocton (18-8) in the Division 4 state semifinals. Listen to the game online here or on WKTY 96.7 FM, 580 AM after the Central-Onalaska boys playoff game, which begins at 6:45 p.m.

Aquinas is led by freshman Lexi Donarski, who has already committed to play basketball at Iowa State University. The 5-foot-10 guard is averaging 11.8 points, 3.3 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks.

The Chiefs may enter the four-team field with the worst record, but four of those losses – two each – came against ninth-ranked Wittenberg-Birnamwood (24-2) and Division 3’s fifth-ranked Amherst (24-2). Another came to fourth-ranked Laconia (22-2).

On top of that, Shiocton, a team that’s gotten healthy at the right time and reeled off eight consecutive wins – its last, against Wittenberg-Birnamwood 61-36 to get to state.

The Chiefs are led by 5-foot-9 junior forward Tina Ubl, who leads the team, averaging 13.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 1.1 blocks.

Aquinas has never been to state in the WIAA but it did win back-to-back WISAA Division 2 titles in 1996 and ’97. The Blugolds also finished runners-up in Class A in 1985 and 1989.

This is the first time Shiocton has made it to state.
