Deal gives Bucks cap flexibility for upcoming seasons

The Milwaukee Bucks announced Thursday it acquired centers Spencer Hawes and Roy Hibbert from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for center Miles Plumlee.

For the Bucks the deal is simple.

“The trade gives us future cap flexibility as we continue to shape our roster,” Bucks GM John Hammond said.

The Bucks signed Plumlee to an oddly long-term, four-year, $50 million deal and he has averaged just 2.6 points this season.

Hawes and Hibbert are barely more productive, but cost severely less. Hawes’ contract has a player-option for $6 million next season, the 28-year-old may let expire. Hibbert comes off the books after this season, after signing a one-year, $5 million deal.

Hawes is averaging 7.3 points and 4.2 rebounds in 35 games but is shooting just 29 percent from deep. The 30-year-old Hibbert averages of 5.2 points and 3.6 rebounds while shooting 54.2 percent from the field.

To make the deal work, the Bucks waived forward Steve Novak.
