So, Tuesday, they signed third-year cornerback Bené Benwikere to the practice squad.
Most will remember the 25-year-old for his performance against Julio Jones this season. A performance that was more Jones than Benwikere.
The Atlanta wide receiver went off for 300 yards and a touchdown on 12 catches that day Oct. 2. He was cut five days later.
The Packers, of course, play Jones and the Falcons at 2 p.m. Sunday, so perhaps Benwikere helps with the gameplan (in what not to do?).
But, given his history with Jones, you have to wonder what disaster could arise if Benwikere plays Sunday.
Jones is kind of becoming notorious in Benwikere’s young career. He played 13 games last season, as Carolina was on its way to the Super Bowl and a nearly undefeated regular season.
But, in a 20-13 loss to Atlanta in Week 16 – the Panthers’ only loss last season – Benwikere broke his leg while chasing Jones.
Before being signed by Green Bay, the 5-foot-11, 196-pound Benwirkere had spent time on Miami’s practice squad.
