Viterbo falls in 1-vs.-2 matchup in Sweet 16
Loss snaps V-Hawks’ 39-game win streak
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The run to a third consecutive Final Four came to an abrupt end this afternoon for the Viterbo University volleyball team.
The V-Hawks entered the NAIA tournament the No. 2-ranked team and came into the Sweet 16 with a 39-game win streak.
Viterbo won its pool to get a higher seed heading into the Sweet 16 but, for some reason, was matched up against the No. 1-ranked team in the country.
Partly the reason for that was because top-ranked Westmont lost a pool-play game – its only loss of the season – therefore sending it down to a lower tier out of pool-play.
And, up against Westmont, the V-Hawks were swept 3-0 (25-22, 25-10, 26-24).
Westmont came into the tournament undefeated but lost a pool-play game, matching it up against Viterbo.
And, in the 1-vs.-2 matchup, Westmont got the 3-0 sweep, ending Viterbo’s winning streak at 39 games.
Westmont improved to 34-1, while Viterbo finished the season 42-3.
