No. 2 Viterbo plays No. 1 Westmont in Sweet 16 today
Unlikely matchup because Viterbo won pool and Westmont did not
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Viterbo volleyball team did everything right in getting out of pool play of the NAIA tournament.
The V-Hawks, coming in the second-ranked team in the nation, picked up its 39th consecutive victory Thursday to sweep the pool in moving on to the Sweet 16.
All that did, however, was set up a matchup with the No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA at 1:30 p.m. today.
While Viterbo did everything right, Westmont dropped its first match of the year and went 2-1 in pool play, therefore dropping its seeding heading into the Sweet 16 and 33-1 overall.
In Thursday’s win to secure a top seed in the first round of the single-elimination portion of the tournament, Viterbo (42-2) was nearly perfect in sweeping No. 15 Doane 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 28-26).
The V-Hawks got 11 kills from Natalie Geidel and 10 each from both Sara Biermaier and Aubrey Aspen. Setter Amelia Grahn had 37 assists for Viterbo, while Baylee Gross added 17 digs and Chloe Jakscht had 10 digs.
