November is deer mating season

With the nine-day gun deer season starting Saturday, more deer will be out of the woods and on the roadways.

In fact, that’s already the case says Jeff Wolf, chief deputy with the La Crosse Sheriff’s Office.

“We always see an increase of deer accidents, especially during October and November, during mating season, and this year is no different,” he said.

It’s the time of year that auto body shops love and drivers hate.

Wolf has a few simple rules to remember: “Most important thing is to just be alert, slow down. Drivers need to pay attention to the warning signs. It’s important that they maintain their lane of travel. Brake firmly but do not swerve.”

Wolf says the jury is still out on whether flashing your lights or honking your horn will get a deer out of the way.
