West Salem, Sparta remain unbeaten

HOLMEN, Wis. — It was a 21-point lead for the Holmen High School football team, before Onalaska woke up.

Brayton Duin hit Jalen Sample for a 35-yard touchdown to finally get the Hilltoppers on the board Friday. 

It was the first of six consecutive touchdowns in a 43-21 victory, keeping Onalaska undefeated (3-0, 1-0) on the season.

It took Onalaska all of 1 minute, 14 seconds to tie the game to start the second half.

Noah Skifton hit Tyler Hughes for a 68-yard touchdown. The Hilltoppers then kicked an onside and recovered it. Seconds later, Duin hit Sample again for a 35-yard touchdown and it was tied 21-21.

The Hilltoppers poured it on in the fourth. Sample, this time from Skifton, scored on a 30-yarder. Nathan Lubinsky busted a run for a 71-yard score, and Duin hit Hughes from 17 out to seal it.

Onalaska used two QBs. Duin went 12-for-25 for 208 yards with two interceptions, while Skifton was 3-for-3 for 105 yards. Sample finished the night with 183 yards on seven receptions.

Holmen’s Seth Wilson – an invited walk-on for the Wisconsin Badgers – scored from 21 and 53 yards in the first half. He finished with 128 yards on 13 carries.

WEST SALEM 24, CENTRAL 7

WEST SALEM, Wis. — Gabe Lamon carried the ball 29 times for 106 yards, including a touchdown, in leading West Salem to a 3-0, 1-0 start.

Matt Johnson, who threw an 18-yard touchdown for Duke Lueth, rushed 12 times for 74 yards to lead Central (1-2, 0-1).

SPARTA 48, AQUINAS 12

At UW-La Crosse, Ryan Wisniewski was a scoring machine for Sparta. The quarterback had three rushing touchdowns and threw two more in leading the Spartans to a 3-0, 1-0 start. Wisniewski rushed 14 times for 145 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown. He was also 3-for-8 for 61 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown pass to Sirrus Bier.

Aquinas is now 1-2, 0-1.

LOGAN 39, TOMAH 10

TOMAH, Wis. — Trey Davis threw for two and ran for another in leading Logan (2-1, 1-0). Both touchdown passes were to CJ Siegel from 33 and 43 yards. Davis finished 11-for-15 for 174 yards, while teammate Gunner Beottcher rushed 23 times for 95 yards. Siegel had three catches for 78 yards. Tomah fell to 1-2, 0-1 on the season.
